Adoption Process Updates

We learned a lot during COVID-19! Read on to see how we have updated our adoption process as a result.

  • What is your new process?
    • We ask that adopters keep an open mind about available pets when working with us to add a new member to their family.

    • Keeping in mind that we strive for same day adoptions when we have available appointments, adopters are encouraged to view available pets on our "Adopt" page, submit adoption materials via email, complete an adoption counseling session via phone with one of our team members, and schedule their adoption appointment to meet with our team and their prospective new pet. This allows our team to offer a more personalized adoption experience and work to make the most appropriate match for the pet and the adopter.

    • We also have a lot of great pets in foster, that are often times overlooked because they aren't in shelter when adopters stop in. Our staff will review your adoption materials and all of the pets in our care to work to make the most appropriate match.

  • Can I still adopt without an appointment?
    • YES! But previously scheduled appointments will take precedence and the same process (described above) will be followed. If we have available appointments when you come, everything will be completed in person. There may be a slight wait time as well.

  • Can I visit with the pets before deciding if I want to adopt?
    • This is our biggest change! Unfortunately we will no longer be allowing visitors access to view pets if our adoption process hasn't been started. This allows our team to provide a more personalized adoption experience to the adopter, work to make the most appropriate match for the pet and adopter, and keeps the stress in our animals down; keeping them happier and healthier while they stay with us.

    • If you're not interested in adopting but want to interact with the pets in our care, we encourage you to consider joining our volunteer team to help us provide enrichment, socialization, and basic care. Visit our "Volunteer" page for more information!

  • Are adoptions still same day?
    • YES! As long as we have available appointments. If we do not, we will look to the next day we are open with available appointments to get your adoption scheduled.

  • Where can I find the adoption materials?
    • After viewing available pets on our "Adopt" page, you can either download/fill out/print the materials and email them to wchsadopt@gmail.com, or email us at that same address asking for the adoption materials.

    • If you don't have access to a printer, or are having issues downloading, stop by during our open hours to request adoption materials.
